Discreet Music (1975) is an album by the British ambient musician Brian Eno. Piece Fripp & Eno’s Evening Star may be his first ambient album and Another Green World features many ambient pieces, this is Brian Eno’s first purely ambient solo album. These are likewise a number 1 “Brian Eno album, when opposed to his last rock albums freed under a title “Eno.
Brian Eno’s construct of ambient music builds upon the construct composer Eric Satie called “furniture music. This means music that is arranged to blend into a ambient atmosphere of the room like than directly focused upon.
A inspiration for this album began whilst Eno was left bed-bedrid by an accident & was given an album of eighteenth century harp music. Fallowing struggling to put a record on a turntable & giving to bed, he realized that it was turned down toward a threshold of inaudibleness & he lacked the nature and severity to let it run higher. Eno said this personal experience taught him the recently way to perceive music.
This album is besides an experiment within algorithmic, generative composition. His intention was to choose multiple ways to produce music by having limited planning or even intervention.
the a-side of the album occurs as 30 microscopic piece coroneted “Discreet Music. It was originally designed as a background for Robert Fripp to play against in the series of concerts.
the liner notes contain a diagram of how else this piece was created. It begins using ii melodic phrases of different lengths played back from either the synthesizers digital recall system. This signal is so dog across the graphic equalizer to occasionally vary its tone. A signal is so redo across an echo unit. the signal is so recorded in a tape recorder. A tape diarrhea to the require-higher reel of another machine. A output of that machine is fed back into a 1st tape recorder which records a overlapped signals.
A 2nd half of the album is ternion pieces together coroneted “Three Variations on the Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel. These pieces were performed per Cockpit Ensemble, conducted & co-intended by Gavin Bryars. A members of a ensemble were apiece given brief extract of the score, which were repeated many days, along by having videos to step by step vary the tempo & more elements of the composition. the titles one pieces were from either erroneous french-to-english translations of the liner notes of a version Pachelbel’s Canon performed per orchestra of Jean Francois Pillard.
Inside “Fullness of Wind a tempo lessens relative to the pitch of the instrument. A fiddle use a fastest rate of decompose when a basses use a slowest. This piece features results & processing by Brian Eno.
Within “French Catalogues notes & melodies of similar tempos come gathered into blockades from either different area of the score.
Inside “Brutal Ardour to each one performing artist plays a sequence of notes of the different duration, and then the original composition yet breaks down into chaos.
This album was too freed on the Virgin label. This release features the slightly extended version of “Discreet Music coroneted “Discreet Music for Electrons.
The brief selectiin of “Discreet Music was featured on Fripp & Eno’s Evening Star, which was released before this album.
